Inquiry Based Learning of Taylor Series using Geometer’s Sketchpad

The presentation will model an Inquiry Based Learning approach to Taylor Series using Geometer’s Sketchpad.  There is a resource available on the Geometer’s Sketchpad website where a model for graphing iterations of a Taylor polynomial is given.  I did not create that resource, I designed an IBL plan that incorporates this particular technology.  I have implemented the following plan in Calculus courses, AP Calculus courses, and through a tutor training at Kent State University at Stark.  I believe that this type of exploration and conceptual understanding is not happening enough in Calculus at both the high school and college levels.

Help your students publish an interactive comic book to the iBooks Store.  The students will become published author and will use a variety of media. Kelly will walk you through how his students took a Common Core Standard of writing a narrative and turned it in to a published comic.  Students turned their narrative into storyboards for a photoshoot complete with green screens and a variety of apps to enhance the work, and used software like Comic Life and Book Creator to assemble the writing. The students created a modern day myth complete with a moral addressing a problem in our world.  The anthology of comics was published to the iBooks Store. This activity will work at any grade level for any subject. It is fun and meaningful. Kelly will also share how his students present their finished product to the class using Apple TV and Reflector 2, as well as demonstrate the basics of using Apple’s iBooks Author application.

An Apple TV is a great addition to any classroom. Learn how to use your classroom as an interactive whiteboard, mirror students work on any app,  from any device, to share with the class and even RECORD it for later viewing complete with the student narration. Apple TVs are also great for  sharing photos and the progress throughout the year as a screensaver when the board is not actively used. There are many great uses for Apple TV in every classroom and Kelly will cover as many as time allows.

Google Drawings is a wonderful tool that can be used for all grades and all subjects.  In the past, I have found that teachers want to leave a conference with lessons and materials that they can use right away.  The goal of this sessions is to provide examples that teachers can take home and use, as well as give them the tools to create new materials for their classroom.  I will be showing examples that can be used in K-12 classrooms across many different subjects aligned to Ohio Standards.  There will also be time for teachers to collaborate and ask me specific questions about integrating Google Drawing into their classrooms.

“Blooming Webquests” is a session that demonstrates how to create webquests that require students to advance along Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. Students must demonstrate Mastery through repetition and failing forward (GRIT). Students will also have the opportunity to “”skip”” levels based on their pre-assessment scores of that particular skill/concept. In the evaluating stage, students will have to prove to their teacher that they can evaluate other students’ work.

“Google-Folio” is a session the demonstrates how students can create a digital portfolio to showcase their work. In the session I will demonstrate how to:

2. Share the template with a class of students using Google Sheets and SiteMaestro
3. Manage student portfolios using SiteMaestro
4. Edit Google Sites

We will also discuss how to use the Portfolio in a single class setting, or in a multi-class setting. Students will be able to showcase their work and track progress using Google Sites.

Electronic books (eBooks) and magazines (eMagazines) are rapidly being incorporated into educational settings. Compared to traditional printed books, eBooks allow readers to have flexible access to content, with the ability to search, highlight, and annotate text. eMagazines allow for the incorporation of content from blogs, news outlets, and social networks. Both platforms permit the integration of various features, including embedded external links, multimedia images/video, and text. We have explored the use of eBook and eMagazine creation by students across the college curriculum – from first semester freshmen to master’s degree candidates – to engage learners and promote retention of material. We will discuss students’ responses, as well as share effective ways for adapting eBook and eMagazine experiences to diverse classroom environments.

21st Century Annotated Bibliography

Over the course of six class periods students will create an annotated bibliography on a topic of their choosing using Google docs, Infohio, Google and Knightcite.  This presentation will show how it fills a need in our classrooms for more practice using research resources, including using databases, using Google properly and creating citations.  After talking about the layout of the project and how each day is broken up I will show the resources used and what a final project looks like.  Finally, I will describe what things I would do different, including how the project could be turned into a multimedia project using Slides.

Using an LMS to Personalize Instruction

Since starting with Schoology and Google in 2013, I have been able to recreate my special education classroom into a paperless, personalized learning experience for my students. With doing this, I have been able to cut my paper consumption by 90% and been able to show my students with special needs how to succeed. On the last year of the Ohio Achievement Assessment, all eight of my students were able to be considered proficient by the state of Ohio on the reading portion. Learn how to use Schoology tools such as individually assign, grading groups, Google Integration and student completion tools to make personalized instruction happen. Attendees will come away with 1) A step by step guide and tips on how to personalize instruction for individuals or groups of individuals so they can reach their fullest potential. 2) Language Arts resources that easily work with Schoology. 3) How to utilize the materials already in your Google Drive to personalize instruction.

My presentation will cover how social media impacts education and the paradigm shift that technology has caused in education.  I will also cover the topics of digital citizenship, PLN’s (personal learning networks), and the unfortunate decline of creativity due to standardized testing. Workshop participants will be encouraged to use their device throughout the session and participate through Twitter.  A brief outline of Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram will also be covered. Cell phones and social media are two  tools that I use to connect with modern students and inspire life long learning. This progressive approach is geared toward authentic student learning in a digital society.
